Honey and Clover

I normally don’t like the shoujo genre. There is a limit to how many quivering eyes, will-they-won’t-they plots, and impeccably timed flurries of sakura petals one can take. There are a few gems in the genre though, ones that take the shoujo troupes and either ignore them or turn them on their heads.

Le Portrait de Petit Cossette

Le PotraitWow, this anime really blew me away. I actually sat there a few minutes after the credits of the final episode rolled stunned and dumbfounded. It’s not an everyday occurrence for an anime to leave me speechless! There are a lot of shows that are good and entertaining, don’t get me wrong, but they don’t really leave a mark.

Whispers of the Heart

Whispers of the HeartWhenever anyone asks me what my favorite Miyazaki film is, I reply Spirited Away. I then quickly add that my favorite STUDIO GHIBLI film is Whispers of the Heart. Please ignore the awkward and embarrassing CGI mecha scene in the middle. We all pretend it just didn’t happen.

Princess Tutu

Princess TutuThis is one of the rare shows aimed at children that even adults can enjoy. The story flows like a fairytale often following fairytale logic as well- probably because the whole theme of the show is ballet. It does a great job of showing the dreamlike stories and mythos of ballet, while often poking fun at the more ridiculous bits and at us for having to suspend our disbelief so often.

Nana (Anime) Review

Nana AnimeI have a love/hate relationship with this show. It’s a wonderful story in any of its incarnations, manga, anime or live action movie. The story, which is very slice-of-life, is interesting and the two main characters and their supporting cast are wonderful- coming across as real people you’d want to meet and become friends with.
