Ranma 1/2

Rumiko Takahashi is the goddess of writing off the wall romances. Seriously, half the stuff she comes up with shouldn’t work as well as it does. Bikini clad alien princesses and their chaotic entourages crashing earth and falling in love with people they really can do better than? Exposing the shocking truth that China is ridden with accursed springs and that forced marriages sometimes work if there are enough martial arts tournaments before the big day? Nuns plus boxing equal One True Love?

Revolutionary Girl Utena

To go along with my themes of recommending old stuff and girl power anime, I’d like to draw your attention to a little beauty called Revolutionary Girl Utena. I loved this series back in the day, and still do in fact. When I started to come out of my Sailormoon Daze and realize there were other anime shows out there, Utena was there to greet me with open arms, confusing and disturbing symbolism, and messages on female empowerment. It helped me grow up in the anime world I think.

Black Lagoon

This was a very fun amoral little series. It was a bit different than I thought it would be. Actually it was exactly what I expected it to be, only more awesome. I remember getting a flyer for it at Tokyo’s yearly new anime fair. I shrugged and thought it was another “girls running around in skimpy clothes with guns for guys who like that sort of thing” story. A few years later a friend made me watch the first episode because it was “the best thing ever." I don’t know if I would call it the best thing ever (Monster already has that place in my heart) but it was certainly entertaining!

20th Century Boys: Beginning of the End

I don’t think the manga for 20th Century Boys is in the States yet, which is truly a pity. I remember hearing that the author, Urasawa Naoki, requested that it be released in America after Monster, his previous work, had been completely translated due to his changing drawing style. The manga is a delight, as are most of Urasawa’s works. He loves to give shout outs to his favorite movies, books and bands and it’s neat to see how he works them into his stories. He’s also a superb storyteller.

Dororo

Words can’t express how much I love this movie but I will try my best to… It’s a given that the plot is killer and it also has an awesome soundtrack, but what struck me the most was how visually stunning it is. Being filmed in New Zealand and also having Kou Shibasaki and Satoshi Tsumabuki as the leading roles probably helped with that a lot. Besides the shallow bits (on my part) the movie is one of the better flowing and well plotted Japanese live action movies that I’ve seen.

Monster

Monster would have to be my all time favorite anime. Actually, I think I would have to say it’s my all time favorite STORY. The plot is so well constructed, intricate and engrossing I think it transcends the medium. Very few stories have had me so enthralled and on the edge of my seat, not an easy feat for 74 episodes!  I can sense many of you backing away at that, but don’t let the episode count daunt you.
