Le Portrait de Petit Cossette

Wow, this anime really blew me away. I actually sat there a few minutes after the credits of the final episode rolled stunned and dumbfounded. It’s not an everyday occurrence for an anime to leave me speechless! There are a lot of shows that are good and entertaining, don’t get me wrong, but they don’t really leave a mark. They are just nice ways to kill an afternoon or a week or a few years, not something that comes close to being a work of fine craftsmanship. I think the anime I would list as genuine works of art could be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Hell Girl

To continue with my theme of scary stories for summer-nothing cools you off better than a chiller tale, so think the Japanese- I would like to bring your attention to a little number called Hell Girl. It’s a ‘quiet’ show, but don’t let that put you off or the fact that it was first put forth as a shoujo (aimed at girls) manga. The anime, from the art style to the story, takes the doe-eyed-ness out of it and gives us an anime that everyone can enjoy.

xxxHolic

Can’t get enough of episodic ghost stories? You aren’t the only one! I adore the genre. If you are a fellow fan of supernatural tales, xxxHolic will more than deliver! Don’t worry, the name isn’t meant to imply something pervy. “XXX” here means “ ________”, so the title really means “(fill-in-the-blank)-aholic”. It’s named thus because the series is mostly about people bringing about their own problems and destructions through personal vices. Though the animation style is a bit weak in the first season, it makes up for it in an awesome story.

Gankutsuou

The art is “teh pretty." Seriously. The animation is an experience in and of itself. Even if you hate the story, which I don’t see why you would, you’ll be in awe of the sheer funky, avant-garde greatness of what Studio Gonzo does in this anime. Please ignore the awkward and embarrassing CGI mecha scene in the middle. We all pretend it just didn’t happen.

User Submitted Review- Heroic Age: Box sets 1 and 2

If I had to pick a word to describe this series it would be "elegant." If I had to pick two, it would be "elegant and epic." Technically that's three, but I'll spare you the Spanish Inquisition skit and get to a review.

Le Chevalier D'Eon Review

This story has everything: pre-revolutionary France, a murder mystery, sword fights, zombies, battle-through-poetry-readings. It’s been a long while since I’ve been this impressed with an anime. The art is breathtaking, they have a first class (Japanese) voice acting cast, and it’s historical. I love historical, behind-the-scenes stories. You know, the ones that tell what REALLY happened, which usually involves possessed flying evil skulls somewhere in them.
