User Submitted Review - When They Cry Gives You More to Fear from Anime

When I first heard some of the reviews from “When They Cry”, I must say that I was thinking horror in an anime didn’t seem possible. But in the first five minutes, you are hooked - though some of the scenes are a little nerve shaking. If you love a good nail biter, this is really the story for you! However, if you think that anime is all fun and games, this series will give you a new twist to that thinking.

Hell Girl

To continue with my theme of scary stories for summer-nothing cools you off better than a chiller tale, so think the Japanese- I would like to bring your attention to a little number called Hell Girl. It’s a ‘quiet’ show, but don’t let that put you off or the fact that it was first put forth as a shoujo (aimed at girls) manga. The anime, from the art style to the story, takes the doe-eyed-ness out of it and gives us an anime that everyone can enjoy.

RIN ~ Daughters of Mnemosyne

Mnemosyne was one of the most disappointing anime I’ve seen in a while. It failed to live up to the hype and to my expectations. The reason I had such high ups for it is because it starts off so good! What’s not to like about a story that stars a lovely, smart woman who runs a private investigator business, can handle herself in a fight and is immortal? She also comes with a merry band of sidekicks: another immortal forever trapped at the age of 13 who loves her hard liquor, an endearing amnesiac, and a loyal (also immortal) sheep dog.

Higurashi When They Cry

This series really surprised me. I didn’t think I would like it, but a lot of my older students were really into it so I decided to give it a go. All they would tell me was that it was about a bunch of kids that die over and over again. When I finished, I was surprised that my students’ parents even let them watch this show!

Ayakashi: Samurai Tales of Horror

I love ghost stories. I’ve loved them ever since I was a little girl and would make my father tell me plots of horror movies as bedtime stories. I also like stories about stories, so when I heard about Ayakashi, I assumed I would fall in love with it. Unfortunately my final verdict was that I was very disappointed in it. Well, most of it, I should say. It wasn’t a total loss, as I’ll explain in a moment.

Monster

Monster would have to be my all time favorite anime. Actually, I think I would have to say it’s my all time favorite STORY. The plot is so well constructed, intricate and engrossing I think it transcends the medium. Very few stories have had me so enthralled and on the edge of my seat, not an easy feat for 74 episodes!  I can sense many of you backing away at that, but don’t let the episode count daunt you.

Le Chevalier D'Eon Review

This story has everything: pre-revolutionary France, a murder mystery, sword fights, zombies, battle-through-poetry-readings. It’s been a long while since I’ve been this impressed with an anime. The art is breathtaking, they have a first class (Japanese) voice acting cast, and it’s historical. I love historical, behind-the-scenes stories. You know, the ones that tell what REALLY happened, which usually involves possessed flying evil skulls somewhere in them.
