Eyeshield 21

Sports anime seem to have a certain magnetism to them. They pull in not only fans of that particular sport, but also people who would never deign to see a real life game of said sport even if their lives depended on it. It’s really hard to put your finger on why sports anime appeal to these non-sports fans. Is it the characters? The often touching overcoming-the-odds story lines? The fact that the main team is always destined to win that final match, so there’s no risk of heartbreak?

Gintama

Gin Tama shocked me by being likable. I went into the series expecting it to be highly offensive, highly puerile, or a combination of the two.  And I won’t deny that it is, but therein lies the series’ charm. The writer of Gin Tama managed to mix all these negative elements up with good characterizations, amusing parodies, and hidden wit into a very entertaining show. This show is not my normal thing. First off the show is chaotically episodic. I have liked episodic shows in the past, but Gin Tama seems to take it to extremes.

xxxHolic

Can’t get enough of episodic ghost stories? You aren’t the only one! I adore the genre. If you are a fellow fan of supernatural tales, xxxHolic will more than deliver! Don’t worry, the name isn’t meant to imply something pervy. “XXX” here means “ ________”, so the title really means “(fill-in-the-blank)-aholic”. It’s named thus because the series is mostly about people bringing about their own problems and destructions through personal vices. Though the animation style is a bit weak in the first season, it makes up for it in an awesome story.

User Submitted Review- Hetalia: Axis Powers

I first heard about Hetalia shortly after the anime came out. The idea of personified nations hadn’t intrigued me at all, and while the art was cute, I didn’t bother checking it out. It wasn’t until a month or so later that a friend sent me an episode at random and told me to ignore the main part, and skip straight to the series “mini-story,” Chibitalia.

Lucky Star

Lucky Star is one of those comedies that are insanely popular and when you boil it down…it’s about nothing. Think along the lines of Azumanga Daioh and Seinfeld if you need references. With shows like that you either “get them” and think they are absolutely precious or are lost in a haze and are confused as to why people would ever like it. There really is no middle ground. It doesn’t help that Lucky Star tries to put off people from watching it with its first episode.

Maria Holic

I don’t think I’ve ever laughed at an anime so hard in my life! Every episode topped the last in its insane, totally-from-left-field brand of humor. An added bonus is that it is animated by Shaft Studios, which means the animation is lovely to look at with lots of creative uses of techniques and background in jokes.

What exactly is the mystery that corned beef holds? It is said that the answer has something to do with the shape of the can. This question sits among the plethora of queries within the world of Galaxy Angel.

Baccano! Review

I think it’s nearly impossible to not like a show that mixes '30s New York gangsters, train capers and secret societies, then throws in an immortality elixir and a demon for good measure. The story constantly shifts between its huge cast with the result that everyone ends up being the main character at one point or another. It also shifts between a span of three years, telling three stories at once almost. This confused me when I first watched it, but then I am easily confused, please don’t mind me.

Princess Tutu

This is one of the rare shows aimed at children that even adults can enjoy. The story flows like a fairytale often following fairytale logic as well- probably because the whole theme of the show is ballet. It does a great job of showing the dreamlike stories and mythos of ballet, while often poking fun at the more ridiculous bits and at us for having to suspend our disbelief so often. They also use classic ballet songs as background music and do so very skillfully, while blending it wonderfully with the plot.
