User Submitted Review - Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Part 1 (Blu-Ray)

Anyone who was a fan of the first Fullmetal Alchemist series, or of the manga, has certainly been anticipating the release of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. That's probably a little unfortunate for the series, as that amount of hype is nearly impossible to live up to. Another unfortunate fact is that the first Blu-Ray only contains the first 13 episodes, meaning it doesn't get into any of the new content. This set merely gives us new, prettier animation for something we saw more than half a decade ago.

Saiyuki

From an artistic and epic story-telling perspective, Saiyuki doesn’t really have any redeeming qualities. It’s a story about a bunch of hot guys riding around in a jeep (which can turn into a dragon when it feels like it) who are going into the west, maybe to save the world, mostly because they have nothing better to do. I absolutely adore it. When someone describes something as being “character driven”, they should use Saiyuki as the primary example. I think the success of the story, and even how it survived past its first wobbly few chapters, is solely due to the dynamic characters.

Tokyo Godfathers

Tokyo Godfathers is exactly what you need when a sappy, feel good movie is required. To my surprise, it hasn’t really gotten the recognition in the States I feel it deserves from anime fans. It’s one of those anime that can be told in any medium, so no giant robots or being flushed away to strange kingdoms here. Despite that though, the animation is top notch in it. I am always impressed with Satoshi Kon’s-of Millennium Actress and Perfect Blue fame-works. He always does a great job, be it as writer, director or both.

Tenchi Muyo

Recently I have received some comments on the fact that I have a penchant for recommending a lot of older series. I'm not doing it accidently or as a way to backhandedly comment on the quality of newer works. As an “older” fan, I like to inform anime lovers who may have come in later to the hobby of some of the great older gems they may overlook due to the glut of the new shiny things that are coming out. Not that new and shiny instantly equals bad, but just because something came out within the last year doesn’t automatically make it good either.

User Submitted Review - Lupin the 3rd: Dead or Alive

Throughout TMS’s production of Lupin projects in the last 20 years, they’ve hit numerous highs (Miyazaki’s Castle of Cagliostro) and irreparable lows (Dragon of Doom, followed by my subsequent vomiting fit.) Where DOA gets its most exalted distinction is that it is the only Lupin film to be directed by the man who created and drew the comics for over 30 years: a jaunty and flavorful Japanese gent who is known globally by the name “Monkey Punch”. Screenplay was done by a guy that goes by the name Hiroshi Sakakibara.

Whispers of the Heart

Whenever anyone asks me what my favorite Miyazaki film is, I reply Spirited Away. I then quickly add that my favorite STUDIO GHIBLI film is Whispers of the Heart. Yup, that’s right. My favorite thing out of all the marvelous things Studio Ghibli has given us wasn’t touched by Miyazaki’s sainted hands (Not that he doesn’t deserve the status of saint-hooded-ness. Put the pitchforks down please). Whispers of the Heart isn’t flashy. There are no forest gods kicking around with young children, no mission for the greater good, and no message about society tucked away in the corners.

Gankutsuou

The art is “teh pretty." Seriously. The animation is an experience in and of itself. Even if you hate the story, which I don’t see why you would, you’ll be in awe of the sheer funky, avant-garde greatness of what Studio Gonzo does in this anime. Please ignore the awkward and embarrassing CGI mecha scene in the middle. We all pretend it just didn’t happen.

Baccano! Review

I think it’s nearly impossible to not like a show that mixes '30s New York gangsters, train capers and secret societies, then throws in an immortality elixir and a demon for good measure. The story constantly shifts between its huge cast with the result that everyone ends up being the main character at one point or another. It also shifts between a span of three years, telling three stories at once almost. This confused me when I first watched it, but then I am easily confused, please don’t mind me.

Black Lagoon

This was a very fun amoral little series. It was a bit different than I thought it would be. Actually it was exactly what I expected it to be, only more awesome. I remember getting a flyer for it at Tokyo’s yearly new anime fair. I shrugged and thought it was another “girls running around in skimpy clothes with guns for guys who like that sort of thing” story. A few years later a friend made me watch the first episode because it was “the best thing ever." I don’t know if I would call it the best thing ever (Monster already has that place in my heart) but it was certainly entertaining!
