Hellsing

Hellsing is one of my favorite horror anime. It's an awesome story with a really great cast. Who doesn't love strong, capable female characters, an awesomely powerful vampire and an old guy who fights with dental floss? The story takes place in merry old England, only it’s not so merry at the moment. England is being assaulted by waves of “fake” vampires. A good thing the royal family saw fit to install an official vampire hunting organization in days of yore. The organization is called Hellsing and is headed by the sole survivor of the Hellsing family, Integra.

RIN ~ Daughters of Mnemosyne

Mnemosyne was one of the most disappointing anime I’ve seen in a while. It failed to live up to the hype and to my expectations. The reason I had such high ups for it is because it starts off so good! What’s not to like about a story that stars a lovely, smart woman who runs a private investigator business, can handle herself in a fight and is immortal? She also comes with a merry band of sidekicks: another immortal forever trapped at the age of 13 who loves her hard liquor, an endearing amnesiac, and a loyal (also immortal) sheep dog.

Bleach the Movie 2: The Diamond Dust Rebellion

I have a confession to make. I like the Bleach movies. I honestly, truly adore them. Shhh. They don’t make my head hurt like other anime movies. There is no careful attempt to have it not break the TV series’ continuity or, worse yet, try to make it fit into the TV series’ continuity. Bleach movies just promise to be a fun romp with characters we already know and love, and that is exactly what they deliver. Please check fandom timeline notes at the door.

Tenchi Muyo

Recently I have received some comments on the fact that I have a penchant for recommending a lot of older series. I'm not doing it accidently or as a way to backhandedly comment on the quality of newer works. As an “older” fan, I like to inform anime lovers who may have come in later to the hobby of some of the great older gems they may overlook due to the glut of the new shiny things that are coming out. Not that new and shiny instantly equals bad, but just because something came out within the last year doesn’t automatically make it good either.

Black Lagoon

This was a very fun amoral little series. It was a bit different than I thought it would be. Actually it was exactly what I expected it to be, only more awesome. I remember getting a flyer for it at Tokyo’s yearly new anime fair. I shrugged and thought it was another “girls running around in skimpy clothes with guns for guys who like that sort of thing” story. A few years later a friend made me watch the first episode because it was “the best thing ever." I don’t know if I would call it the best thing ever (Monster already has that place in my heart) but it was certainly entertaining!

Naruto Shippuden V 1 and 2

I respect the beginning arc of Shippuden immensely. I think it’s cool that they actually aged the characters and actually had them grow into their attitudes and abilities! It’s very rare that a shonen series does that. Most characters seem trapped in whatever age the story started them off in and keep them that way (and in that same mindset) for however many years the manga/anime runs. But the Naruto kids grow up fine! They learned from the past five seasons and it actively shows in their personalities. They come off as being real people, Sakura especially.
