User Submitted Review - Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Part 1 (Blu-Ray)

Anyone who was a fan of the first Fullmetal Alchemist series, or of the manga, has certainly been anticipating the release of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. That's probably a little unfortunate for the series, as that amount of hype is nearly impossible to live up to. Another unfortunate fact is that the first Blu-Ray only contains the first 13 episodes, meaning it doesn't get into any of the new content. This set merely gives us new, prettier animation for something we saw more than half a decade ago.

Honey and Clover

I normally don’t like the shoujo genre. There is a limit to how many quivering eyes, will-they-won’t-they plots, and impeccably timed flurries of sakura petals one can take. There are a few gems in the genre though, ones that take the shoujo troupes and either ignore them or turn them on their heads. There are also those tales that take the old clichés and totally make them their own, giving us a story which still has themes we’ve seen before, but tells it in a way that makes it all seem fresh and original.

Hellsing

Hellsing is one of my favorite horror anime. It's an awesome story with a really great cast. Who doesn't love strong, capable female characters, an awesomely powerful vampire and an old guy who fights with dental floss? The story takes place in merry old England, only it’s not so merry at the moment. England is being assaulted by waves of “fake” vampires. A good thing the royal family saw fit to install an official vampire hunting organization in days of yore. The organization is called Hellsing and is headed by the sole survivor of the Hellsing family, Integra.

Ranma 1/2

Rumiko Takahashi is the goddess of writing off the wall romances. Seriously, half the stuff she comes up with shouldn’t work as well as it does. Bikini clad alien princesses and their chaotic entourages crashing earth and falling in love with people they really can do better than? Exposing the shocking truth that China is ridden with accursed springs and that forced marriages sometimes work if there are enough martial arts tournaments before the big day? Nuns plus boxing equal One True Love?

Eyeshield 21

Sports anime seem to have a certain magnetism to them. They pull in not only fans of that particular sport, but also people who would never deign to see a real life game of said sport even if their lives depended on it. It’s really hard to put your finger on why sports anime appeal to these non-sports fans. Is it the characters? The often touching overcoming-the-odds story lines? The fact that the main team is always destined to win that final match, so there’s no risk of heartbreak?

User Submitted Review - When They Cry Gives You More to Fear from Anime

When I first heard some of the reviews from “When They Cry”, I must say that I was thinking horror in an anime didn’t seem possible. But in the first five minutes, you are hooked - though some of the scenes are a little nerve shaking. If you love a good nail biter, this is really the story for you! However, if you think that anime is all fun and games, this series will give you a new twist to that thinking.

Saiyuki

From an artistic and epic story-telling perspective, Saiyuki doesn’t really have any redeeming qualities. It’s a story about a bunch of hot guys riding around in a jeep (which can turn into a dragon when it feels like it) who are going into the west, maybe to save the world, mostly because they have nothing better to do. I absolutely adore it. When someone describes something as being “character driven”, they should use Saiyuki as the primary example. I think the success of the story, and even how it survived past its first wobbly few chapters, is solely due to the dynamic characters.

Gintama

Gin Tama shocked me by being likable. I went into the series expecting it to be highly offensive, highly puerile, or a combination of the two.  And I won’t deny that it is, but therein lies the series’ charm. The writer of Gin Tama managed to mix all these negative elements up with good characterizations, amusing parodies, and hidden wit into a very entertaining show. This show is not my normal thing. First off the show is chaotically episodic. I have liked episodic shows in the past, but Gin Tama seems to take it to extremes.
